Coyote Speaks Cross Country Run edition by Peter Likins Literature Fiction eBooks
Peter Likins has written a fascinating cultural story which starts in the Southwest, specifically southern Arizona on a chicken farm where a couple cares for as many as ten orphan children at a time. This book is about the life story of one of those orphans, Kit Coyote Viejo whose journey of challenges and successes is the basis for an eye-opening human interest adventure. The book is about finding one's self and one's purpose in life, despite the difficult journey getting there. It also resolves a mystery that ties together many details which opens up the necessary revelations about Kit Coyote's early life and reason for abandonment and becoming an orphan. The author creatively comes full circle in helping the reader understand the complicated issues which made Kit Coyote's emotional and personal life so difficult.Life on the farm with the Durkins is filled with grueling hard physical labor, with very little love and emotional support from Jake Durkin, called "the Old Man" by the orphans, and Molly Durkin his passive wife, called "Aunt Molly". Aunt Molly makes her life more bearable by cooking delicious meals and by having a secret love affair with the Baptist minister, without her husband ever suspecting it. The Old Man died under questionable circumstances which becomes another one of the mysteries that is unraveled toward the end of the book in a very creative manner by the author. Kit Coyote becomes a runner, running in the mountains and deserts of Arizona. In high school, his running skills become the basis for turning his life around, and opening up new doors and possibilities for a better future.
The story continues in Pennsylvania where Kit Coyote wins an AAU Cross Country Race one of the rewards of which was a a gold ring. After the race, an auto accident occurred involving a Jamaican girl, named Lani Beckman who was also an AAU runner. This event changed Kit Coyote's outlook on life once more. He saved Lani's life and somehow became intertwined in it in unexpected ways. Lani returns home to Jamaica to recover from the physical and emotional scars of the accident but she does not forget Kit Coyote who saved her life. Lani was no longer quite the same person after the accident but the changes were not immediately evident. Kit had fallen in love with her and did not realize the serious toll this would take on his life due to her personal inner struggles. They got married without her parents' permission which was another strike against this ill-fated marriage. Kit graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor's degree in English and completed a Master's degree as well. He became an English teacher and wrestling coach. His life seemed on a good course but Lani's problems escalated and Kit lost his job due to associated problems which arose in his life. He and Lani divorced. Kit chose to return to Arizona, his former home and eventually builds a new life, with a new wife. Later in life, he seeks answers to questions he had about his early life and childhood which he was certain were the basis of his own complicated emotional life and behaviors which sabotaged his successes.
The story spans over forty years of time and is told in about 250 pages which is amazing, given the detail written about Kit Coyote's early life, his childhood struggles growing up as an orphan and his later successes as a high school and college athlete. The author writes the book in two parts and in part two, tackles the problems which created demons that haunted Kit Coyote throughout his life. The reader learns, out of the clear blue, when he was an award winning college runner, Kit is interviewed by Andrea Parker, a writer for RUNNING Magazine who is fascinated by his success and wants to learn his motivation and determination to run. She unwittingly becomes the conduit or connection to another person who eventually helps Kit unravel the mysteries of his life. He learns the answers to many serious questions which provides the resolution to the major problems that have haunted him throughout his life. This book is well written on an unusual topic and provides answers to many thought-provoking questions and helps resolve a very important mystery in the life of Kit Coyote. There are a few awkward areas which had me deduct one star but overall I totally enjoyed the book. The reviewer received a complimentary copy with the option to review. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

Coyote Speaks Cross Country Run edition by Peter Likins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Peter Likins “Coyote Speaks – Cross Country Run” captures the plight of Kit Coyote traumatized by the beating, verbal abuse, and hatred of Jake Durkins his foster father. Durkins operated a chicken ranch and foster home in the semi-arid desert of Ajo, Arizona, located about 100 miles from Tucson.
Coach K. from nearby Tucson discovered Kit’s natural gift for running and took an interest in training him in the finer points of running competitively. When life at the chicken ranch became unbearable Kit escaped the horror of hatred and abuse and ran from Ajo to Tucson to the home of Coach K. and his wife Teresa. The Karangetti’s became his new foster parents. Opportunities opened up for Kit during high school in Tucson. He excelled in running and in the sport of wrestling and received a college scholarship at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. A series of bad choices, led to the need to establish a new identity for Coyote he became a fugitive of the law and fled to California.
Likins writes with a rare sensitivity and gentle spirit that reveal a keen observation of the best in mankind even in light of exposure to the most deplorable and evil of others. This understanding allows him to use the elements of story and a fictional approach to become platform for issues of socio and culture inequity. The realism and striking imagery found in “Coyote Speaks” add a dimension to the elements of conflict and resolution used throughout the story to develop a suspenseful plot and to build character identity.
“Coyote Speaks – Cross Country Run” is timely, especially relevant in light of recent acts of random shooting, acts of terrorism, and international racial and religious tension. This is a poignant story of the impact of childhood trauma on life choices in times of personal crisis.
